Energy-saving light bulb broken
What should I do if a mercury-containing lamp breaks?
Please observe the following instructions:- If the lamp in a luminaire has broken, first disconnect the luminaire from the power supply to avoid electric shocks.
- Ventilate the room for 20-30 minutes (open the window). Leave the room during this airing. It is best to switch off the heating or air conditioning.
- Leave the windows open during the subsequent tidying and cleaning work.
- Put on disposable or household gloves so that you do not cut yourself on the broken glass.
- First sweep up all larger parts of the lamp with stiff paper or cardboard and place them in an airtight container (e.g. screw-top jar or strong, sealable plastic bag) and take it outside.
- Use a moistened household cloth or adhesive tape to pick up small pieces and dust. Pack the lamp remnants, cloths, gloves, etc. in the airtight container as well. This container can be disposed of in a collection box.
- Small fragments and splinters from carpets or upholstery can be picked up with adhesive tape.
- Only use the hoover as a last cleaning measure and if the surface leaves no other choice. Keep the windows open while vacuuming. Dispose of the hoover bag and the fine dust filter in the residual waste bin afterwards.
- Wash your hands and clothes after cleaning up.
- Dispose of both broken and non-functional lamps properly.
